Carley’s Magical Gardens are based on an adventure story written by T.J. Dixon and James Nelson for all the children and their families who must spend days and weeks in the Hemotology and Oncology Unit at Rady Children’s Hospital, San Diego, CA. The story, which is then illustrated in the gardens, will provides a fun and special sense of place at the hospital to help alleviate the stress associated with a hospital stay. The children receive a storybook and a compact disc recording of the story upon admittance that provides an introduction to the “other” world to be found out in the gardens.

The ensuing garden design was the result of a collaborative effort by eight San Diego artists. There are three courtyard gardens: the Garden of Dreams, the Buggy Garden and the Friendship Garden. Most of the sculptural elements are interactive and lit at night to provide a wonderland of discovery 24 hours a day.
